Artemisia absinthium is a perennial plant that was used as an herb by many peoples.
The plant has been cultivated since biblical times, to deal with epidemics and as an insect repellent. Her bitterness metaphorically represents sin in the Bible. It was used since the time of Hippocrates and is also mentioned by Lucretius. They believed that it strengthens memory and logic, helps with pain in muscles, joints and connective tissues, strengthens vision, deepens sleep. Due to the latter property in the villages the pillows were filled with Wormwood. During cholera and plague epidemics, they hung the plant in the houses and smoked the premises by burning Wormwood shoots.
