ALCANA
Botanology: The plant Alkanna tinctoria, is a biennial or perennial native plant of southern Europe belonging to the Boraginaceae family. The root of the plant, which is usually very large in proportion to the size of the plant, produces a red dye from its bark. One of the main ingredients of its root is alcannine, a pigment soluble in oils and alcohols that gives a bright purple color.
History: The medicinal properties of this substance have been documented since the time of Dioskouridis, the father of Pharmacology who lived in the 1st century AD. The first reference to the beneficial and therapeutic properties of the root of the plant Alkanna tinctoria is made in the work of “Medicine Matter”, where it is treated as a medicine for the treatment of wounds and burns.
Pharmacology: Pharmacology: Biological studies over the last 30 years have shown that the oily extract of Alkanna tinctoria has antimicrobial (acts against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis), anti-inflammatory and antineoplastic activity. The most important but most interesting property of alcanin and shikinin is its healing action. It is given to traumatic skin-ulceration solutions, burns, ulcers of various reasons such as venous ulcers, ulceration ulcers, periarteritis nodosa, basal erythema and hemorrhoidopathy.
