Valeriana (Valeriana officinalis)
Is also known as spikenard, centrinthos, elderberry and is one of the most well-known herbs since it has been used for more than 2,000 years.
Valerian has relaxing and calming properties. It helps in cases of chronic insomnia. Specifically, valerian is used for anxiolytic, sedative and hypnotic purposes. It is also used to relieve muscle spasms and as a general purpose mild sedative. It has been proven in clinical studies that the use of valerian improves the overall quality of sleep. It reduces the time it takes to fall asleep. It reduces the possibility of waking up at night and generally lengthens the total sleep time.
Also, as a muscle relaxant it can be used to relieve cramps, intestinal colic and bladder stones and as a pain reliever valerian can be used to relieve pain associated with nervous tension and migraine.
